A fun little online tool I recently came across is Google Trends which gives information on trends and popularity of common search terms on Google.  I did a little experiment to see how various medical specialties stack up. The top graph is volume of people who have searched a particular term.  The bottom graph indicates news references to those specific terms.  I have to say I was a bit surprised by some of these trends.  Read on for some casual observations…

Why More Medicine Doesn’t Equal Better Health

Everyone knows the outrageous costs of healthcare in our American economy.  The fact that $1 out of every $6 earned in this country goes to health care cost is atrocious given the fact we aren’t even near the top of the list as far as the healthiest countries.  There is so much buzz in the healthcare community and the radiology community right now about the proposed changes Obama plans and this will fundamentally change the way we practice medicine in the future. Read on…

Ok, enough about radiology.  Let’s talk tech.  Not much news in the gadget world if you exclude all the Palm Pre Hysteria going around but Apple is getting ready to kick off their annual World Wide Developers Conference this Monday in San Francisco.  Among the highlights will be the possibility of a new iPhone model including one which will be cheaper ($99) and with better capabilities.  It will also signal the impending launch of the 3.0 firmware for the iPhone for all those current owners. Also noteworthy is the possible return of Steve Jobs after his several month hiatus dealing with health issue related to his Islet Cell Carcinoma of the Pancreas.  His absence has been covered in a shroud of mystery thus far and it will interesting to see what his role will be with Apple in the near future.  Expect to see a few other things like bumps in specs for Laptops (FYI, don’t buy an Apple Laptop this weekend if you want it to be already outdated on Monday!).

Ok, now, carry on…oops…about the free stuff…Well it turns out Lonely Planet is offering their San Francisco iPhone Guide for FREE for a limited time if you plan to attend or just have an excuse to check out what’s happening in the Rice-a-Roni city. iTunes Link Here.

A time of triumph and a time of despair…

“There are no mistakes.
The events we bring upon ourselves,
no matter how unpleasant,
are necessary in order to learn
what we need to learn;
whatever steps we take,
they’re necessary to reach
the places we’ve chosen to go.”

Richard Bush
American Author

The last few months, weeks, and days have been filled with great emotion and deliberation.  It started with the quiet fear we felt deep down when 2009 was upon us and we were face with the rather daunting task of mastering radiology.  The fatigue we endured having to balance life, service, and the pursuit for knowledge.  The triumph many of us felt when wes received written confirmation that all that hard work we endured over the last five years meant something.  And the despair others felt in being told it was not quite enough to receive that same accolade.   It has truly been a roller coaster ride.

My heart goes out to those who have fallen into the condition group.  I can only imagine the disappointment, anger, and despair one must feel at this time.  I hope you don’t give up.  This is a minor set back and only that (remember, the term means you will pass on condition).  Do not back down from this challenge.  The hard part is already behind you.  Take a moments rest to gain your mind and wits about you and then attack your weaknesses and make them your strengths.  Use the resources available to you (Radiology Geek’s Rad Vault, your colleagues, and your attendings) to help you on this journey.  If you give it an honest 2nd effort I’m confident the outcome will be different.  Good luck to all.

After harassing the postman for the last several hours, I have finally discovered my fate…

ABR news

Man, I never thought it would be this much torture having to sit around for the postman to come by on a lazy Saturday afternoon in Seattle.  Usually he’s here by 10:30am but I think he decided to take a little siesta before making his most important stop today.  Good thing I didn’t run into him personally or else our conversation would have gone maybe a little like an episode out of Seinfeld.  Hello Newman!!! (his name isn’t Newman but that’s what I would call him), Hello Radiology Geek!!!…Oh I guess you can read on to see where this story goes…
